What's app Snooping and Data Privacy

whatsapp is one of the most widely used app in the world for communicating.
there are lots of privacy issues for this from the beginning  and the app getting updated to be secure.

recently an Israel spyware pegasus which was created in 2016 has been used by some hackers to steal the data from whatsapp chat.they mainly targeted journalists and activists to steal their private information.

pegasus is an individual targeted hack which breaks the protection of all operating systems, like all other hacks it will find zero-days (namely bugs which are not known to developers also) to hack the system.this bug then infiltrate in to all the software and leak our information.as these are zero-day bugs these are impossible to  stop in advance.

these type of attackers will only target individuals because if they targeted huge people this will lead to find the bug and fix this.the bug also works in only few configurations so the send a link by message or email and infiltrate into our systems.even  a zero day hack, in order to reach you, has to allow the access to the stage at which information is decrypted (this is what Pegasus was able to do).

As of records 121 out of 1400 users are from India whose whatsapp has been hacked by pegasus.the congress party is saying that the ruling BJP party has involved in this scam as most of the affected people are the ones who are opposing BJP government.

the indian govt has also started taking action against this and also consulted whatsapp about this issue and they said that that particular zero-day bug has been fixed.WhatsApp has appointed a Grievance Officer in India to take care of users complaints.
India is WhatsApps biggest market with more than 40 crore users. WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, which also owns Instagram. Facebook has around 30 crore Indian users, while Instagram has about 6.9 crore users.it is clear that data of Indians, including governmental data is being stored in systems which may effect national security

As of the growing technology any thing can happen at anytime we must be careful about how we are using the new technology and try not to keep our private information in un secure places.
